One of the neatest
things about being Music Director at a Southern Gospel radio station is
the fact that you really get a chance to meet and know the artists you
program. Such is the case with one of WCKB's most popular group's,
Higher Faith. Higher Faith makes their home in the Bayou country --
yes, Louisiana -- so we don't get to see them as often as we would
like. In fact, last year at NQC was the first chance that I had
gotten to meet Pat, Ken, Patrick and Taylor in person. I had
spoken with Pat several times on the phone. He would always take
the time to call and see how Higher Faith's singles were making out in
Dunn, NC. From talking with him I always thought -- and still do
-- that Pat Price is one of the greatest, most sincere men in the
industry today. Higher Faith has a sincere desire to see lives
changed through the power of Jesus Christ through song.
Several months ago, we found out from Laura
and Terry Hudson of Showcase Media that Higher Faith had been invited to
perform at Faith 2000 July 21st in Rock Hill, SC. We immediately
marked our calendars for the event and anxiously counted down the
days. We had already told the 'big guy', Ron Tart, that we would
like to take a vacation day that day, and of course he complied.
He wasn't about to tell us no! And then we got a pleasant
surprise! Our dear friend Mark Surles of The Surles Family
informed us that they would be performing with the Anchormen (more great
friends of ours!) that Thursday, the 20th and asked if we'd like to go
with him and his wife Yvonne. Well, needless to say it didn't take
us long to answer him! Before we knew it, we were on our way to
Roanoke Rapids in the Surles' van for a great evening of Southern Gospel
music. Our vacation had started a day early!
Friday morning, Lottie and I got up early
and were ready to head to Rock Hill, SC by 11:00 AM. The concert
was slated to begin at 7:00PM, so we had plenty of time for a leisurely
drive to our neighboring state. We arrived at Winthrop Coliseum
just in time to intercept Terry Hudson and get our BACKSTAGE passes for
Faith 2000. We were so excited, we actually had passes to go back
stage and pretend like we were VIP. As soon as we walked up, we
met with the guys from the Bayou -- Higher Faith. They were busy
getting ready for the concert, so we said hello and headed indoors --
where it was a lot cooler -- and got our seats.
The meeting began promptly at 7:00 PM -- mainly because Faith 2000 was
being televised live throughout the Charlotte/Rock Hill area.
About forty-five minutes later, Higher Faith came on stage and set the
place on fire with their Cajun-flavored Southern Gospel music.
